E. Victor Ross, MD is a board certified dermatologist with specialties in cosmetic dermatology and laser skin surgery. He is the director of Laser and Cosmetic Dermatology at Scripps Clinic, a large multispecialty clinic in San Diego, California. Dr. Victor Ross’s career in the medical aesthetics field has been fruitful, to say the least. He was the first Navy-sponsored fellow in photomedicine and lasers at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was able to conduct thorough research and clinical trials in photodynamic therapy and newfound laser applications.
As a dedicated industry professional and lifelong learner, Dr. Ross has received a handful of accolades for his continued research and contributions to his field; Vic Ross was awarded Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Award for Excellence in Military Medicine. He was also elected as President of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Dermatologic Surgery (ASLMS), where he later received the Caroline and William Mark Memorial award and Leon Goldman awards.
In his day-to-day practice, Victor Ross, MD utilizes a cherry-picked selection of advanced technologies to treat patients’ concerns—including fine lines and wrinkles, red and brown skin lesions, hair removal, and skin laxity and excess fat reduction using noninvasive equipment.
As such, Dr. Ross understands and prioritizes the importance of choosing credible, high-performance, and reliable technology to perform treatments with. According to him, the Sylfirm X by BENEV has been, by far, the most notable radiofrequency (RF) microneedling device out of all technologies he has worked with over the past ten years.
Combination Features and Top Highlights
Radiofrequency microneedling is nothing new to the medical cosmetics world. In fact, the first recorded RF microneedling treatment dates all the way back to 1905 when a German dermatologist effectively treated acne scars using an abrasive resurfacing technique.
Fast forward to the present day, and we have entered a new wave of radiofrequency microneedling. Ever since the 2020 launch of Sylfirm X, the world of RFMN has completely turned over on its head with the revolutionary ability to employ dual wave technology in order to better personalize patients’ treatments.
The Sylfirm X is the world’s first and only U.S. patented radiofrequency microneedling device with dual wave modes: Continuous Wave (CW) and Pulsed Wave (PW).
“It’s a little bit like going to the buffet. There are a lot of choices and you have to pick and choose what’s going to give you the best flavor for the most time—and I think Sylfirm X combines some features of radiofrequency microneedling that are very nice.”
Victor Ross, MD initially stumbled upon Sylfirm X after having used a variety of other RFMN devices, and there were a considerable amount of features that both appealed to him and widened his treatment horizons like never before. First on his list, the “Sylfirm X is a very smooth operator, in the sense that it has a step motor that’s very easy to listen to and easy on the patient as far as pain.”
Although some practitioners might look down on the Sylfirm X’s consumable tip design with 5x5 (25 pin) needles, Dr. Ross actually regards this as a plus. The human skin is naturally resistant to needle penetration, so more needles doesn’t always mean more effective penetration; Vic Ross, MD claims that, “in fact, fewer needles sometimes is better because more needles means that you can’t get the needles all the way in… So 25 needles is actually quite nice because you’re more likely to have needles go in.”
The Sylfirm X allows practitioners to dictate how deeply they insert needles into their patient’s skin. Starting at a target depth of 0.3mm, users can treat the superficial layer of skin (papillary dermis), or treat up to 4.0mm in order to address deeper skin layers such as the deeper dermis and S.Q.
The biggest feature that sets Sylfirm X apart from other radiofrequency microneedling devices on the market for Dr. Ross is its dual wave pulse structure. Like we mentioned earlier, the Sylfirm X is the world’s first and only dual wave radiofrequency microneedling device—no other RFMN device on the market has ever offered aesthetic physicians the chance to alternate between treatment modes.
Now, the door has opened up to effectively treat multiple skin conditions and concerns, and even skin of color.
